In approximately 2 months, voters across the country will head to the polls to choose national, state, and local officials. These elections can have a significant impact on the rights of hobbyists, fanciers, and purebred owners. It is essential for the future of our purebred dogs and the sport that you help us ensure that dog-friendly candidates are elected in November.
AKC Government Relations has created a 2022 Election Guide with simple things you and your club can do to make a difference in the upcoming elections – from ensuring all your club members are registered to vote, to identifying the dog-friendly candidates in your area. |

With election day right around the corner, now is the time to find out where the candidates stand on important canine legislative issues. To help, AKC GR has updated the Canine Legislation Candidate Survey.
This useful tool can help you quickly identify candidates who are friendly and committed to protecting the rights of responsible dog owners and breeders as well as the health, safety, and well-being of the dogs. From dog shows to field trials, to agility and other competitions, to hunting, to training, to breeding, and even grooming, activists are increasing pushing anti-dog owner legislation at the federal, state, and even the local level by either outlawing, or limiting the ability to continue to enjoy and hold events or raise the dogs we love.
Regardless of the level of government a candidate is seeking, the survey is designed to help you assess where the candidate stands on a variety of important canine issues. It can also be used as an educational tool to help the candidate understand the broad scope of issues to be considered and how important they are to members of their constituency. Visit the AKC Government Relations toolbox to print or share a copy of the survey so you can make an informed decision on the candidate based on information that is important to you. |

AKC PAC Chairman, Gail LaBerge, provides Georgia Senator Butch Miller with a check from the AKC PAC earlier this year. Senator Butch Miller is President Pro Tempore of the Georgia Senate of the General Assembly. In that position he is the leading member of the Georgia Senate. Senator Miller has been a strong supporter of fair and responsible dog legislation and willing to work with us on Canine issues. AKC PAC:
The American Kennel Club takes the lead in supporting legislation across the country that protects the rights of responsible dog owners. The AKC Political Action Committee is an important tool that gives dog enthusiasts and advocates additional opportunities to interface with legislators through support of select legislative campaigns. Through the PAC, we can demonstrate a unity or purpose that helps us advance a positive legislative agenda.
How it works: The AKC PAC collects voluntary contributions from individuals and uses these donations to support candidates who defend dog owners’ rights and who can positively impact canine legislation. Donors must be a member of an AKC club. Contributions to the AKC PAC are not deductible on federal tax returns. Federal and state laws require the AKC PAC us to use our best efforts to collect and report the name, mailing address, occupation, and name of employer of individuals who donate to the PAC. The maximum annual contribution is $5,000.
Canine Legislative Support Fund:
The American Kennel Club has been advocating for purebred dog owners since our founding in 1884. The AKC Government Relations department was founded in 1990 to take an active role in protecting owners’ and breeders’ rights from infringement by activist legislation and laws. The right to own and breed dogs responsibly is threatened by the introduction of repressive canine legislation at the state and local levels. Combating negative canine legislation is a costly endeavor. The AKC Canine Legislative Support Fund (CLSF), was established as a way for clubs, individuals, or other entities to help support AKC’s advocacy efforts and activities. Donors to the CLSF need not be individual club members. Donations can be made to the CLSF online or by check made payable to the Canine Legislative Support Fund. Contributions to this fund are not tax deductible.
